Investigation of High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics Phenomena, Installation of the ASTRI-Mini Array Construction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Small Size Telescopes (CTA-SSTs)

    Em andamento

The visible matter in the Universe is predominantly in a plasma state, i.e., it is composed of magnetized and ionized or partially ionized gas. The High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics group (GAPAE) at IAG-USP, having as partners researchers of CRAAM, EACH-USP and UFABC, has been exploring, for more than two decades, fundamental plasmas and high energy processes in astrophysical sources, using theoretical and numerical magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) fluid description, as well as observational tools. These fundamental processes encompass particle acceleration, turbulence, magnetic reconnection, MHD shocks, instabilities, origin and amplification of cosmic magnetic fields, and non-thermal emission, applied to vast astrophysical framework from compact objects to clusters of galaxies. This thematic proposal aims to request funding to continue to support the CTA, the ASTRI Mini-Array, and our research activities. It is nestled in a broader international effort to build the CTA, now in its construction phase. CTA will have telescopes of three distinct sizes, the Large, Medium, and Small size telescopes (LST, MST, and SST, respectively), and the ASTRI telescope is the SST prototype that has been chosen (out of two other prototypes) to be the SST structure of the CTA, putting the ASTRI team as protagonist of the next steps of the Project development.

Investigation of High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics Phenomena: Theory, Numerical Simulations, Observations, and Instrument Development for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)

    Concluído

Most of the visible matter in the Universe is in a plasma state, i.e., is composed of ionized or partially ionized gas permeated by magnetic fields. The High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics group of E. M. de Gouveia Dal Pino of the Instituto de Astronomia, Geologia e Ciências Atmosféricas da Universidade de São Paulo (IAG-USP), A. B. M. Valio of the Centro de Radioastronomia e Astrofísica da Universidade Mackenzie (CRAAA) and Diego Falceta Goncalves of EACH-USP have been developing several correlated projects using theoretical and numerical magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) fluid description, as well as observational tools, to investigate astrophysical plasmas and high energy phenomena. In this framework, special emphasis has been given to the studies of: 1) astrophysical jets and accretion disks/coronae around stars and black holes; 2) origin, propagation, and acceleration of cosmic rays; 3) stellar and galactic winds and their gas/energy/magnetic field feedback into the cosmic environment; 4) effects of MHD turbulence and supernova shocks on star formation and magnetic flux transport; 5) solar and stellar magnetic activity, the dynamo problem, and construction of a Virtual Solar Observatory; 6) extra-solar planets, small extra-solar bodies and dwarf stellar companions; 7) planet migration; 8) the shaping of the magnetic field properties of the local universe; and 9) the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetic fields in the turbulent intracluster (ICM) and intergalactic medium (IGM) employing a kinetic-MHD (KMHD) description. Most of these studies have been carried out with the help of fully 3D MHD numerical modelling employing sophisticated codes and numerical techniques, and focusing on the development of high energy and fundamental plasmas processes such as, turbulence, magnetic reconnection, dynamo action, shock waves, MHD and kinetic instabilities, and stochastic acceleration, which have resulted in significant contributions in the field. In this Proposal we aim to continue these studies. Besides, in the recent years, our group has been involved in the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Project, an international collaboration (involving 29 countries) aiming the construction of a new generation of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. CTA will provide the deepest ever insight into the non-thermal, high-energy universe and allow significant contributions to cosmology, astroparticle physics and, in particular, to cosmic ray accelerators, cosmic magnetic fields and gamma-ray burst (GRB) investigation. Currently, the construction of a CTA Mini-Array consisting of a small sample of (up to 7) Cherenkov telescopes has been approved by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research under the coordination of Giovanni Pareschi, Director of the INAF-Brera Astronomical Observatory, which will constitute a pathfinder and the "core" for the big array and allow for extensive testing and high quality data gathering already in the preparatory and construction phase of the full CTA. The approved funding by the Italian government will be able to sponsor only part of the Mini-Array. The present proposal aims to request funding to support the construction of three (3) Cherenkov telescopes, in order to complete the CTA Mini-Array, in full partnership with the Italian group, with complete access to the technological know-how and the array construction. Besides, as described above, in view of the extensive number of related projects being developed by our group, an upgrade of our computational facilities (also acquired with former FAPESP support) will be necessary.

Magnetic reconnection and related processes in collisional and collisionless astrophysical plasmas: from solar flares to extragalactic sources

    Em andamento

Nowadays in the astrophysical community, the problem of magnetic reconnection is approached using two different points of view, from the micro-physical scale using collisionless kinetic numerical studies, and from macroscopic magnetohydrodynamical fluid approximation studies, describing well the collisional media. Both approximations have their strong points, but also significant limits, sometimes resulting in separate parameter spaces. There is no real afford taken to understand the bridge between those two approximations applied to the magnetic reconnection problem. The aim of this project is to fill this gap and perform studies which allow to understand the precess of reconnection in both regimes, collisional and collisionless. The collisionless studies, using the Chew-Goldberg-Low magnetohydrodynamics fluid approximation (CGL-MHD) allowing for the presence of the kinetic instabilities, can be directly compared with the Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations, using for example a hybrid kinetic-MHD models, which dominate the studies in this regime up to date. As a consequence, the second part of this project will cover the applications of the magnetic reconnection and related processes in both regimes. These applications in plasma physics cover turbulence generation and feedback on the reconnection process, magnetic field amplification mechanism, high energetic particle acceleration. The results have applications in the physics of solar flares, the importance of reconnection in space weather (e.g. interactions with magnetosphere and processes in magnetotail), the interactions of solar magnetic field with the interstellar field in the heliopause, going further up to the scales of active galaxy nuclei and gamma ray burst, where the process of reconnection together with turbulence is expected to be very important in the acceleration of TeV particles. Finally, the properties of turbulence and reconnection in collisionless environments, such intracluster medium, can benefit significantly from our studies.

The role of plasma dynamics at stellar and galactic scales on the process of star formation

The intergalactic medium is composed by rarefied hot plasma, considered non-collisional in many cases, with complex dynamics. It is known that this plasma is also magnetized. However, the dynamics of magnetized non-collisional plasmas is not fully understood. In this work we will evaluate the role of plasma instabilities in the intergalactic medium. In particular, we will study the amplification of the magnetic energy, and the correlation lengths of the field lines, as well as the particle acceleration under these instabilities and the synchrotron and gamma emissions related. These models will be compared to the observations. Also, we will continue the study on AGN jets and their role on the dynamics of the intergalactic medium, as well as in the suppression of cooling flows.
