Resumo biográfico
Possui graduação em Bioquímica e Química pela University of Toronto (1985), mestrado em Bioquímica também pela University of Toronto (1988) e doutorado em Ciências Biológicas (Bioquímica) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1994). Atualmente é professor Titular no Departamento de Bioquímica do Instituto de Química e Vice-Diretor do Instituto de Química da Universidade de São Paulo. O foco principal da sua pesquisa é entender a base estrutural de processos importantes para a comportamentos bacterianos complexos, utilizando como modelo o fitopatógeno Xanthomonas citri, causador do cancro cítrico. Os sistemas sob estudo incluem: i) Vias de sinalização que envolvem o importante segundo mensageiro bis(3-5)diGMP cíclico (c-diGMP) que controla comportamentos complexos em bactéria como produção de fatores patogênicos, pili de tipo IV, motilidade e formação de biofilmes; ii) O funcionamento e regulação do pilus do tipo IV, usado pelo Xanthomonas para se translocar sobre superfícies sólidas (motilidade "twitching"), para se organizar em biofilmes e interagir com bacteriófagos; iii) O funcionamento do sistema de secreção do tipo IV, usado pelo Xanthomonas para transferir toxinas para outras bactérias, iv) O fenômeno de 'quorum sensing' pelo qual bactérias dentro de uma população coordenam suas atividades em uma maneira dependente de densidade celular. Suas pesquisas técnicas de biologia estrutural (cristalografia, microscopia eletrônica e RMN de proteínas), espectroscopia, microscopia de fluorescência, produção de nocautes gênicos e a análise de redes de interação proteína-proteína. O Dr. Farah é o Diretor do Centro de Pesquisa em Biologia de Bactérias e Bacteriófagos (CEPID B3), uma rede de pesquisa com polos sediados em São Paulo (IQ-USP, ICB-USP), Campinas (IB-UNICAMP, IAC), Ribeirão Preto (FCFRP-USP, FMRP-USP) e Rio Claro (UNESP) cuja missão é desenvolver pesquisa básica de ponta sobre mecanismos moleculares de primordial importância para entender a reprodução, o comportamento multicelular, a competição, a colonização e as interações de bactérias com seus hospedeiros eucarióticos e seus principais predadores, os bacteriófagos.

A Biologia de Xanthomonas citri
O foco principal do nosso laboratório é entender a base estrutural de processos importantes para a patogenicidade bacteriana. Usamos como modelo o fitopatógeno Xanthomonas citri, causador do cancro cítrico. Os sistemas sob estudo incluem: - Vias de sinalização que envolvem o importante segundo mensageiro bis(3´-5´)diGMP cíclico (c-diGMP) que controla comportamentos complexos em bactéria como produção de fatores patogênicos, pili de tipo IV, motilidade e formação de biofilmes. - O fenômeno de ?quorum sensing? pelo qual bactérias dentro de uma população coordenam suas atividades em uma maneira dependente de densidade celular. - O funcionamento do sistema de secreção do tipo III e do tipo IV, necessários para a transferência de fatores de virulência para a célula hospedeira. Nossos trabalhos combinam técnicas de Biologia Estrutural (cristalografia, cryo-EM e RMN de proteínas), espectroscopia, produção de nocautes gênicos e a análise de redes de interação proteína-proteína.
