What is the composition of the bulk silicate Earth (BSE), encompassing its rocky mantle and crust?
In the past two decades, ab initio simulations of materials under extreme pressures and temperatureshave made remarkable strides, enabling the prediction of physical properties of complex mineralassemblages and melts under conditions akin to those in Earth's interior (~6,500 K and 3.6 Mbar). These simulations have become crucial for complementing and extending experimental data acrossa range of temperatures, pressures, and compositions, essential for exploring the Earth's deepinterior. With these advancements, it is now possible to develop a predictive theory of the Earth'smaterial properties. This proposal aims to address a fundamental geophysical question that has beendebated for over 60 years: What is the composition of the bulk silicate Earth (BSE), including itsrocky mantle and crust? For this, we will give a special focus on the least understood region of themantlethe lower mantle. Understanding the composition of the BSE will not only provideinsights into the Earth's core composition and properties, which are vital for understanding thegeomagnetic field's generation, but also illuminate the early Earth's evolution from a magma ocean, created by the Moon-forming Great Impact, into a differentiated, layered planet. To tackle thisquestion, we will first develop new mutifrequency compressional- and shear-wave globaltomography models for the Earth's whole mantle. This will involve integrating body-wavetraveltimes, surface-wave overtone phase-velocity measurements, normal-mode splitting functioncoefficients, and Stoneley mode splitting function measurements with an adaptive parameterizationtechnique. This approach will provide higher resolution in areas with dense measurement coverage, resulting in high-resolution images and a more comprehensive utilization of seismic data. This willenable us to map both P- and S-wave velocity distributions over a broader period range than istypically possible with full-waveform inversion. Subsequently, we will translate these new seismictomography images into 3D mineralogical and thermal models. For this, our project will includethe development of: a) a comprehensive database of properties, including seismic wave speeds ofsingle phases and phase assemblages in equilibrium, and b) statistical tools to convert observedseismic wave speeds into mineralogical-thermal models. These resources and methods will be madepublicly available and compatible with popular codes for thermochemical equilibrium andgeodynamic simulations. This project will pioneer a crucial intersection of geophysics andgeochemistry, fostering convergence research between Materials Science and Earth Sciences bydeveloping innovative data and software tools that will enable the translation of newmultifrequency tomographic images into detailed thermal and mineralogical models. Through thisapproach, we seek to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the mantle's structure andcomposition, helping to resolve key uncertainties that have persisted for decades.

What is the nature of the 660 km discontinuity in the Earth's mantle?
The mantle transition zone, located between depths of 410 km and 660 km, is characterized by phase changes in the mineral olivine, the most abundant in the mantle. It plays a key role in the convection mechanism, whether in layers or involving the entire mantle. Therefore, understanding the structure of the transition zone can provide important constraints on the predominant convection style in the Earth's mantle, which remains an open problem in geodynamics. PP-waves and their precursors, P410P and P660P, are used to determine variations in the topography of the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities. However, the P660P phase is not observed globally, despite predictions by mineral physics, and several hypotheses have been proposed for its non-detection without a consensus being reached. As the nature of the 660 km mantle discontinuity remains elusive, understanding the difficulty in detecting the P660P phase may lead to a better insight of the 660 km discontinuity and its role in mantle dynamics. We hypothesize that inaccuracies in calculating PP-waves travel times in a heterogeneous mantle hinder precise P660P phase alignment during waveform stacking, challenging its global detection. Thus, in this research project, we will focus on analyzing how the effect of large-scale heterogeneities of the P-wave in the mantle affects the travel time and amplitude of PP-waves and their precursors. Inaccurate travel time calculations for the moveout correction procedure may cause the cancellation of misaligned phases in the stacking process of seismograms, preventing the precursor signal from rising above the noise level and masking the detection of the precursor associated with the 660 km discontinuity. For this purpose, we will use a large set of synthetic seismograms obtained by the spectral element method with the PREM model and with five P-wave seismic tomography models for 50 events uniformly distributed throughout the globe and recorded by 18,397 virtual seismic stations. From stacked seismograms, we will estimate travel times using ray theory and finite-frequency theory for the five seismic tomography models. With this, we will be able to map global variations in the travel times of PP-P410P and PP-P660P and analyze how theoretical simplifications affect the travel time predictions of the PP and its precursors, impacting the alignment of discontinuity phases and consequently the accurate estimation of the discontinuities' topographies at the mantle transition zone. Additionally, we will estimate amplitude ratios of P410P/PP and P660P/PP for the stacked synthetic seismograms to determine how lateral variations in amplitude ratio may be associated with compositional anomalies in the mantle. To verify the resolvability of lateral variations in the topography of mantle discontinuities using PP precursors, the spectral element mesh of SPECFEM3D_GLOBE will be distorted to analyze how harmonic variations in the topography of the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities, with different wavelengths and amplitudes, are recovered. While this research has a seismological focus, the outcomes will be relevant for researchers across a wide spectrum of disciplines involved in the study of global-scale mantle structure and processes. For decades, geodynamicists, mineral physicists, and geochemists have been trying to understand the role of mineral phase changes and compositional variations in mass transport throughout the mantle.

Ab initio modeling of seismic velocities in aggregates and melts for the interpretation of a new seismic tomography model: towards new constraints on the upper-mantle thermochemical structure beneath South America
As the Earth's interior behaves elastically, the propagation of seismic waves is determined by the elastic constants of the component material. Comparing the elastic properties of potentially relevant minerals with seismic observations allows us to relate these observations to geological processes and the thermal and chemical state of our planet. Thus, this research seeks to employ ab initio modeling techniques to advance our understanding of seismic velocities in aggregates and melts, with a specific focus on interpreting a new upper-mantle seismic tomography model beneath South America, which is being derived through the FAPESP Regular Project 2022/04357-0. By integrating seismic tomography velocity-attenuation models with high-pressure mineral physics principles, we aim to elucidate the complex interplay between temperature, composition, and geodynamic processes within the Earth's upper mantle, particularly for the upper mantle underneath South America.

Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS).
Over the past two decades, ab initio materials simulations at extreme pressures and temperatures have significantly advanced, allowing for the prediction of the physical properties of complex mineral assemblages and melts under conditions and chemistries anticipated in Earth's interior, i.e., ~6,500 K and 3.6 Mbar. These simulations have become crucial in complementing and extending experimental data across a continuum of temperatures, pressures, and compositions essential to exploring the unknown aspects of Earth's deep interior. Developing a general predictive theory of the Earth is now possible based on its material properties. This proposal brings together a mineral physicist, a seismologist, a geodynamicist, and an applied mathematician with complementary expertise capable of advancing this vision. We will address a fundamental geophysics question debated for over 60 years: What is the composition of the bulk silicate Earth (BSE), encompassing its rocky mantle and crust? We will focus on the mantle region with the least understood composition: the lower mantle. Understanding the BSE composition will shed light on the Earth's core composition and properties, which is vital to understanding the generation of the geomagnetic field. It will also elucidate how the early Earth evolved from a magma oceanproduced by the Moon-forming Great Impactinto a differentiated, layered planet. To address this question, we will translate seismic tomographic images of the lower mantle into mineralogical and thermal models and test interpretations dynamically to reproduce surface observations and provide feedback. We will address lower mantle regions with dissimilar seismological properties and expected distinct chemical compositions, e.g., the ancient Farallon subducting plate, two large low-velocity provinces rising from the core-mantle-boundary (CMB) almost in opposite directions, the D region right above the CMB, and the ambient lower mantle in between such features. We will develop a) a database of properties, including seismic wave speeds of single phases and phase assemblages in equilibrium, and b) statistics and machine learning tools to convert observed seismic wave speeds into mineralogical-thermal models. These data and methods will be publicly available and interoperable with popular codes for thermochemical equilibrium, e.g., PerpleX, and geodynamic simulations, e.g., ASPECT. While generating the database, we will implement workflows automating ab initio computations of materials properties of broad interest in Materials Science and produce pedagogical materials in seismology. This research will also impact materials theory and simulations. Mantle phases are iron-bearing oxides, a class of materials that has challenged physicists for over 60 years. These phases at high pressures and temperatures reveal exquisite phenomena such as spin transitions, which are strictly quantum phenomena that shed light on electronic correlations. Equally challenging is the theory of solid solutions applied to minerals - complex, multi-component, correlated, natural materials. The magnitude of the problem and the integrative aspect of this project invite community contributions to foster a more collective effort. We have identified an emerging international consortium of data contributors and users. We will bring two senior undergraduates from Tuskegee University for summer internships with the team. Using novel mathematical methods, we will prepare five postdoctoral researchers/research scientists for careers in this emerging integrative research. We will have a workshop bringing researchers with opposite views on the BSE composition to summarize their arguments. Locally, this project will help develop a novel and essential activity in geophysics and geochemistry, creating conditions for convergence research connecting Materials Science and Earth

RSBR-Mar: Rede Sismográfica Brasileira no Mar

Sequential inversion of surface wave dispersion curves and geoid anomalies integrated to shear wave splitting analysis: new constraints on the velocity, attenuation, density, and anisotropy structures of the crust and upper mantle beneath South America.
Integrating different geophysical datasets is essential to obtain improved models of the Earth?s interior heterogeneities, as it helps to restrict the solution space of the properties investigated by each method. Although new models of physical properties in South America have been derived, they still lack resolution, making it difficult to clearly distinguish all geological features and estimate compositional and thermal variations in order to link them with past geodynamic processes responsible for the current tectonic setting of this region. These models are no longer just important for pure research since it has been shown they have, for example, important socioeconomic and environmental applications, such as targeting potential giant metal reserves of base metals, which are essential for the replacement of fossil energy by the so-called clean energy for sustainable development purposes. Thus, in this project, we will use a combination of methodologies to obtain new constraints on the 3D shear wave velocity, attenuation, density, and anisotropic structures of the crust and mantle beneath South America. High-resolution S-wave velocity, attenuation, anisotropy, and density models will be derived from the sequential inversion of phase velocity and amplitude dispersion curves of Rayleigh and Love waves and geoid anomalies. A joint posterior probability density function will be used to express the likelihood of the solution to our problem. We will develop a machine-learning-based algorithm to measure Rayleigh and Love waves amplitude and phase velocity dispersion curves from seismograms recorded by all stations available in South America and model them with Fréchet kernels so that finite-frequency effects are considered. The residual geoid anomalies to be inverted will be obtained by removing the known lithospheric component effects, which mask the signal of density perturbations in the mantle, and modeled using tesseroids to take into account the Earth?s sphericity. We will provide additional constraints to our surface-wave anisotropy model by integrating receiver function studies for analysis of P-wave phases converted to S-wave, and analysis of seismograms for determination of anisotropic parameters associated with the shear wave splitting of WKS waves, with the use of the traversal component minimization method. The isotropic high-resolution S-wave velocity will be used to derive a new lithosphere thickness model for the whole continent. Based on the improved 3D density structure of the lithosphere obtained in this project, we will numerically calculate the stress field in the crust and lithospheric mantle considering variable rheology in accordance with the different lithological layers in the continental lithosphere and adjacent oceanic plates. Geodetic observations using GNSS time series will be performed and combined with azimuthal seismic anisotropy and numerical simulation of the stress field to provide insight into the balance of forces driving deformation across South America.

On the reliability of the ACH tomography method
Seismic tomography is one of the most powerful seismological techniques to unravel the Earth's deep structure. For local and regional tomography studies, a classical approach to image the Earth?s velocity structure is to use a teleseismic tomography methodology known as ACH (Aki, Christofferson, and Husebye) method, named after the authors of the seminal papers by Aki et al. (1977). The fundamental hypothesis of the ACH method is that the time residuals generated outside the volume of study are approximately constant across the seismic array. Thus, only the final parts of up going ray segments within the target volume are modeled in three dimensions while the Earth outside the target volume is just any standard 1-D Earth model. Owing to the computational limitation in the 70s and 80s, the fundamental hypothesis that underlies the ACH method took a long time to be verified. Based on ray-theoretical calculations, Masson and Trampert (1997) and Zhao et al. (2013) concluded that the travel time residuals due to mantle heterogeneity outside the target volume are not negligible. However, due to the limitation of ray theory, this result may be inconclusive. Thus, it is crucial to quantify the influence of the mantle velocity structure outside the volume of study on the relative travel time residuals and understand how it propagates to the teleseismic tomography images of the ACH method taking into account full finite-frequency effects. To accurately investigate how the theoretical assumptions of the ACH method influence the estimated velocity structure of a target volume, I propose to carry out synthetic waveform analysis based on the Spectral Element Method (SEM). Using the SPECFEM3D GLOBE package by Komatitsch and Tromp (2002). I will analyze seismic waveforms with periods T > 5 s propagating through a 3D whole-mantle global seismic tomography model. Travel time anomalies for P-wave and S-wave phases will be measured by cross-correlation and will be used to understand how the effect of mantle heterogeneities outside the target volume influence the relative travel time residuals and the recovered velocity structure from tomography experiments.
